Office is the Government department responsible
for internal affairs in England and Wales. They work to
build a safe, just and tolerant society, to enhance opportunities
for all, and to ensure that the protection and security
of the public are maintained and enhanced.
Community safety - what's happening
nationally?
We now have the highest ever number of police officers patrolling
our streets,
and people are starting to feel safer.
As of December 2003, there were:
* 138,155 police officers (a rise of more
than 14,000 in 3 1/2 years), and
* 3243 Community Support Officers
At the local level, the following groups are
most involved in ensuring community safety:
* Crime & Disorder Reduction Partnerships
* Community Safety Officers
* Neighbourhood Wardens

What is the British Crime Survey?
The British
Crime Survey (BCS) is a very important source
of information about levels of crime and public attitudes
to crime and other Home Office issues. The results play
an important role in informing Home Office policy.
